Our Journey

The journey of Aambra Foundation has its roots in the dynamics of India’s development. Notwithstanding our status as the world’s largest democracy and focus of governmental actions on the development of a disempowered population, the vulnerability of weaker sections of society, like women and children, to abuse, neglect, discrimination, and exploitation remains a gigantic developmental challenge for the country. India occupied 112th position in a list of 153 countries that were covered under the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Index 2020.

India occupied 112th position in a list of 153 countries that were covered under the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Index 2020, and in accordance to the UNGC (United Nations Global Compact) India study, India is the only country among the 153 surveyed countries where the economic gender gap is larger than the political gap. The study also additionally highlighted how gender stereotypes and lack of infrastructure deprive women from being able to reach leadership roles.

In fact, there are multiple other forms of deprivation that women continue to face due to lack of access to development opportunities like skill training, the prevalence of obscurantist social practices like patriarchy, and inadequate awareness of rights and entitlements as guaranteed under the Constitution of India and system of governance.

Aambra Foundation is therefore an attempt towards achieving 17 SDGs in alignment with the Government of India’s transformative agenda, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At the core of this global agenda for 2030 is the principle of universality: ‘Leave No One Behind’. Development in all its dimensions must include all people, everywhere, and should be built through the participation of everyone, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized. This comprehensive agenda recognizes that it is no longer sufficient just to focus on economic growth, but on fairer and more equal societies, and a safer and more prosperous planet. At the UN Sustainable Development Summit in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted, “Sustainable development of one-sixth of humanity will be of great consequence to the world and our beautiful planet.

With a special focus on SDGs, 1, 3, 8, 5, and 10, we strive to counter people’s vulnerabilities, especially that of women and children, by bridging developmental gaps that are manifested at the level of knowledge and access to opportunities. Although the Trustees were actively working towards gender equality and social justice since past many years, the Foundation saw the light of day in 2012 as a collective expression of their desire to contribute to the cause of social development. It was registered in Delhi in the same year as a non-profit charitable Trust under the Indian Trust Act, 1882. This marked the beginning of a journey that continues to gain momentum with every passing year.
